IHR TV #5 – A Windows Weekly Plea (IHR_TV_2009_03_23)

On the very silly IHR TV #5, Derek K. Miller proves that he can rock on too! He pleads for Paul Thurrott and Leo Laporte not to replace his theme music for the Windows Weekly podcast with the title track from the album “Enigma,” by Microsoft’s retired chief of Windows development Jim Allchin. Derek can play metal too! Really! Watch!

IHR TV #4 – Using MIDI Drums (IHR_TV_2008_07_06)

On IHR TV #4, Derek K. Miller demonstrates to Leo Laporte how he uses a Yamaha DTXPress MIDI drum kit, both with internal sounds and with external MIDI-generated instruments (including an organ!) in GarageBand.

I originally planned to record my own segment on how this MIDI drumkit stuff works, but then realized that my final appearance on Leo’s now-cancelled The Lab show (broadcast from 2007 to 2008 on G4TechTV and CityTV in Canada, and the HOW TO Channel in Australia) covered pretty much everything I wanted to say.

IHR_09_19_06 Bonus Video on GarageBand

This video is formatted for the video iPod using MPEG-4 encoding. On your Mac or Windows computer, you can use iTunes or QuickTime (both free) to view it.

As we will mention on IHR #24 later this week, there is a very cool undocumented feature of GarageBand 3 where you can drag loops, samples, and even external audio files onto the onscreen keyboard, and then trigger them there or using an external MIDI controller. Paul has put together a short (2 min 47 sec) video podcast showing you how it works. If you got these notes in your podcast subscription, you can play the video in your podcatcher or iPod.

If you’re reading this on the blog, you can watch the full-size 640×480 video online (right-click or ctrl-click to save it to your computer first). You’ll need QuickTime (free) or another MPEG-4 viewer to see it.

Zoom video

If you use a Mac, did you know that Mac OS X has a built-in screen-zoom feature? It’s designed as part of the disabled-accessibility features of the operating system, but Paul finds it’s very useful for enlarging those teeny-tiny controls so many DAW and plugin manufacturers include with their products, especially on a large screen.

Check out the video (1 minute 3 seconds) to find out how to set the zoom up, and how Paul uses it.

UPDATE: When Apple released the Mac OS X 10.4.8 update at the end of September 2007, it included a nice preference setting to have zooming turned on by default, and controlled using your mouse scroll wheel.
