    Hey!

Great episode. Did you end up using the Marshall MXL770 mic on this one? Curious how it compared to previous episodes with the MXL990, but you didn’t mention it, so I wasn’t certain.

I’d like to hear your comments on the mics, if you have any!

    Thanks.

    James

I did use the 770, and honestly, without the pad and low-cut filter on, it sounds pretty much identical to the 990 as far as I can tell — in other words, really good!

I wondered… I didn’t notice a large-enough difference in sound quality that I could have told you it was a different mic “for sure.”

If you get the chance, I wonder if others might like this too: a mic review/comparison at certain price ranges, to allow people on limited budgets the chance to eval the tonal qualities of a number of mics in a given range.

Reason I ask… I’m using an older RE20 for VO projects and vocal arrangements for an acapella singing group. I have a hard time getting a strong signal out of it, unless I hit the micpre hard (about 60db!) and nearly eat the mic. I’d rather avoid fiddling with processing to get better levels, and am looking around. However, as an example, I see a lotta mics in the $100-200 range that *might* do the job of giving me a stronger signal and sounding nice for my voice – just within the MXL line there were quite a few. How to tell them apart?

Living where I do, I do not have a major city or music store within a few hours drive… I know there are numerous equipment aspects to such a review (EQ, micpre, etc.), but if you kept to a single micpre and no tweaking, and exercised a half-dozen mics in a lineup, wouldn’t the mics tend to show their flavor?

Just a thought, or maybe a request!, for your consideration.

Thanks again. I enjoy the show, and these “chats.”

    James

That kind of shootout could be difficult, because there are a lot of quality mics at all price points now, from sub-$100 on up, and often whether a mic is “good” depends on the use you put it to. An SM57 dynamic mic may not be great for vocalists (although you’d be surprised sometimes!), but can work wonderfully for electric and acoustic guitars and snare drums, even in the highest-end setups.

Also, as Paul pointed out on his first vocal recording 101 a couple of episodes ago, a mic that sounds good on one voice might sound bad on another. Even a $2000 Neumann might not work for a specific singer. I don’t have the kind of setup that permits objective frequency-response analysis, but it’s certainly something I’d be interested in trying at some point in the future.

I am in the process of buying a near field monitor. I have gone thro various reviews and the budget constraint. I have chosen Tannoy Reveal5a and ADAM-A7.
Can I have your expert opinion about my choice.
    Regards
    RAMESH
