Apple’s new iPod nanos can record sound too
September 14th, 2006 by Derek

Two days ago, Apple announced a complete new line of iPods, including modestly feature-improved “big” iPods (not the widescreen ones long rumoured), a teeny tiny metal iPod shuffle that’s the size of a coin, and a full new line of iPod nanos with aluminum cases and various colours. (Plus a majorly revamped iTunes 7 application, an expanded U.S. iTunes Store with full-length movies, and an announcement of an upcoming set-top wireless video interface box, codenamed “iTV.”)
Not mentioned at the time, but coming to light now in iLounge’s comprehensive take-apart review (scroll down to the New Features section), the new nanos also record sound, unlike their predecessors but like the current and most recent big iPods. Using the same recording accessories, such as the Belkin TuneTalk Stereo I just reviewed on IHR #23, the new nanos can record stereo CD-quality sound for almost four hours on a full battery, and mono sound for more than eight hours.
With their lower price, smaller size, longer recording time, and flash memory instead of a hard drive, the new nanos could make an even better recording option for podcasters and others than the larger iPods, especially since the hard disk noise picked up by the mics on my iPod wouldn’t be there at all. Plus they come in cool colours!

If you’re interested in buying any of the new iPods or other products from Apple (new iMacs or Mac Pros, anyone?), you can use our Apple Store or Amazon
affiliate links to help support IHR in the process.
P.S. Apple introduced new iPod earbuds too. They have rubber on the earpieces, and so should fit more snugly to give better sound reproduction. They still won’t be nearly as nice as the headphones and in-ear monitors I recommended a few episodes ago, but are an improvement over the previous included models.

In addition, here is a nice FAQ from iLounge on the new iPods, plus two galleries of photos of the Zune, Microsoft’s competing audio player they announced (but aren’t shipping) today.

Also, in addition to this, there are rumours that iPhone (iPod Cellphone) is gonna materialise.
