Belkin TuneStudio puts a mixer around your iPod
January 9th, 2007 by Derek
This just in via Paul. If you have a fifth-generation iPod (the “video iPod”), Belkin just announced something for you at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES): the TuneStudio.
It puts a four-track mixer with two XLR inputs around your iPod and lets you record to the built-in CD-quality (16-bit, 44.1 kHz) WAV recorder. It will also interface via USB to your computer, and includes a hardware compressor. It should be out in the summer for $180 USD. We’ll see if we can get one to test—this could be a really interesting portable podcasting or live recording rig. Plus it certainly looks cool.

When I’m ready to buy, I’ll buy through your link from zZounds! $180 is pretty tough to pass up for such a device.

This is awesome, but there seems to be a lot of talk out there about it being a “4 track recorder” when what people mean is it’s a 4 channel desk that feeds a two channel (stereo) mix to the the iPod. Probably needs to be more clearly worded but clarity vanishes when something as cool as this hits the stands and the hype starts flowing ;-)
Still a damned cool, no, FREAKIN’ AWESOME gadget though :D

It is a four-channel mixer with a stereo bus to the iPod. I wonder whether it is stereo-only in as a USB interface? Probably.
But as I noted in a discussion with Tod Maffin over in the Flickr comments for the image, it’s one of those things that looks so neat that you just want one, and will figure out what to do with it later.

I haven’t seen one in person yet, but given that this was announced almost a year ago now for $250, it should be available via Belkin dealers.

Actually, I was just browsing for this device… headed to Belkin’s site to see what they said. It is still listed as “coming soon”, but now has a suggested price of $399! WTF!
