SEGMENT – Flanger, Phaser, Chorus, Oh my:

I go on a voyage of self-discovery and enlightenment to uncover the secrets and differences between the Flanger and Phaser effects. Chorus came along for the ride. Here are some screenshots from Ozone4 that show how each effect affects a white-noise wave-form:

  2. About the flanging/phasing segment examples:
The Van Halen and Heart examples were using an electronic flange effect.
Eagles’ “Life In The Fast Lane” was actual tape flanging.
Billy Joel’s piano in “Just The Way You Are” and the guitar in Live’s “Lightning Crash” were both phaser stomp boxes, kinda like the old MXR phase 90.
I don’t think you made this clear enough on the show, otherwise this was a great segment! Keep up the wonderful shows, Dave. I’ll be listening as long as you keep doing it. Don’t stop!

  3. Dave says:

Bill – excellent points. Thanks for the info! I’ll be sure to bring those points up in the next podcast.

Yeah, I wasn’t intending to get too deep into the actual sonic differences of the different varieties of effects out there, but rather the broad-brush, general comparisons of the effects.

Thanks for the comments and for listening!

    Cheers, Dave
