Context is everything

Back in January, Joshua Bell, probably the most accomplished young violinist of our age, spent a bit of time incognito as a street musician in a Washington, D.C. metro stop, and while he played some of the same pieces that command ticket prices of hundreds of dollars at sold-out shows around the world, on the same multimillion-dollar Stradivarius violin, almost no one stopped, and he made $32.
“If we can’t take the time out of our lives to stay a moment and listen to one of the best musicians on Earth play some of the best music ever written,” asks the author of the article (found via Darren Barefoot), “if the surge of modern life so overpowers us that we are deaf and blind to something like that — then what else are we missing?”
