How to beat up a guitar

Andy Summers Replica Tele | NAMM 2007The Wall Street Journal shows how the Fender guitar company creates its relic guitars (via J-Walk), which are brand new instruments that have been scratched, scraped, sanded, burned, and generally abused to appear as if they have been well used and played for decades. It’s a strange process, but one for which there is significant demand.

Personally, I prefer to let my guitars age the old fashioned way, but lots of people enjoy the feel of a broken-in neck and cigarette-burned body, and if they want to spend an extra $500 USD to get it, that’s up to them.

  1. Isn’t this the same strange thing as the jeans with cut trouser legs and tattered ends you could buy in the 90′s ;-) They were even more expensive than the normal ones. Buying a whole pair and then cutting and tettering them yourself was the cheaper solution.

Some people seem to have too much money …
