Zoom issues Leopard USB fix
November 8th, 2007 by Derek
Wow, these guys are fast. Zoom has issued new firmware for the Zoom H2 (version 1.2) and Zoom H4 (version 2.1) to update support for USB mass storage (“Connect to PC” mode) with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.
These updates should let both recorders operate normally (as they previously did with Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger) for reading and writing files over a USB connection with Macs using Apple’s latest operating system. Links on the firmware download pages include instructions on how to update your device.

I can’t do step 3< nothing shows up on my desktop,
3. Copy the “SYSTEM.BIN” file into the root directory of the SD card via a USB connection. (An SDHC card cannot be used for version-up. Please use an SD card.) help!

The firmware is a file you put on the SD card for your H2 — it’s not Mac or Windows specific, at least if it’s like the H4 firmware I installed. There are instructions with the firmware:

Why would you want to record from the speaker out when you can connect the Zoom to your computer via USB directly, or use a card reader with the SD card, and you have a digital file already in WAV or MP3 format? That’s what the H2 recorder is for — to make digital files directly!

The key point that is left out here for us Leopard users is that we have to own an SD card reader, since the H2 SD card doesn’t mount on our Mac when connected.
Am I correct?

Yes, in order to add the updater file to the SD card, you will need another way to connect the SD card to your computer. I recommend having an SD card reader to use with the H2 (or any other SD device), since that avoids having to use power for the H2 just to read and write SD cards. Plus they’re dirt cheap these days. I have 3 or 4 around the house for use with recorders, cameras, etc.
