Derek’s dad’s audio gear is older than Derek
August 31st, 2008 by Derek
My father spent much of his time in the ’60s and ’70s installing juke boxes throughout British Columbia, and I spent much of my childhood listening to juke box equipment in our basement. Even now, the speakers for the stereo system in my living room are Seeburg-branded boxes (with high-end Altec Lansing drivers inside) that used to live in a bar somewhere—their brown cabinets are stained (but thankfully don’t smell) from years of smoke and beer.
My dad has put up his own blog post about the audio gear in his basement, which includes both LP- and 45-sized juke boxes, two truly massive double-15″ speaker cabinets of his own, and his home-built light organ. You don’t want to mess around with this system: it sounds awesome, he can plug his MP3 player into it, and he can do some pretty serious cranking up if he wants to. Plus it’s totally retro, baby!

I too worked with these units back in the late 60′s. Much to the dismay of my parents I fell in love with these hulking speakers. Where I worked we had a storage room filled with these large speakers that came back off the routes. I just had to have a pair. After finding out what was inside I went to my boss to see if he would sell me two. He agreed and said he’d have to think about a price. After several days he comes to me and said how about $75.00 each. At the tender age of 20 I had not yet develpoed a good poker face but I said I needed to think about it. What’s to think about? These things are great. I bought four pair before leaving his employ. I still have two pair and are using one as my front speakers in my home theatre along with a Paradigm center, Bose 301 for the rear and a Definitive sub. It all came together rather nice. Much to the dismay of my wife. Oh well! Just goes to prove father does know best.
