Drumming for Non-Drummers – Piano Roll Snapshots
October 1st, 2008 by Dave
Hey everyone,
Here are the snapshots for the Drumming 101 – Drumming for Non-Drummers segment in IHR#62. For initial reference, I’m using C1 as my kick, D1 as my snare and C2 as my hi-hat. It’ll be more or less obvious what’s added / changed after the first image.
First, we start off with the basic 4/4 beat – Hi Hat on the 1/8th notes, Kick on 1 and 3 and Snare on 2 and 4:
Next I did some fancy “footwork” moving around the kick and adding some beats:
Next we opened up the hi-hat:
Changed the open Hi-Hat to be less cliche:
Now, let’s do something with that snare:
And some more…
Then, some fun with Toms…
Okay, maybe not toms… I skip over the crash and slushy hi-hat pics. Here’s what the last ride track with hits on the bell and rim of the cumbal looks like:
Happy Drumming!

Dave and everyone, I had meant to include these screenshots in the enhanced podcast (he even formatted them to be the right size!), but I was putting the show together so fast to try to publish it before September ended that they completely slipped my mind! Sorry.
Anyway, they’re here now. Ahem.

Nice job.
A total newbie like me had fun copying these patterns in my sequencer.
Thanks a lot.
