Snow and Holiday Phun

January 2nd, 2009 by Dave

Well, I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday.  Merry Christmas, Happy Hanahkah, Happy New Year (and anything else I forgot).

Up here in Vancouver, Derek and I experienced what typically is reserved for the east coast:

SNOW!

It was weird, but it’s almost as if the brunt of the snow fall was isolated to the Vancouver region.  My family and I were up in Whistler (just 2 hours from Vancouver) over Christmas wishing for the snow we were seeing come down on the Vancouver newscasts!  We returned to have to shovel our way to our front door through 2-foot drifts.

We then took a trip down to Seattle for New Year’s and were surprised to see that there was virtually no evidence of the white stuff as soon as we crossed the border (about half an hour south of Vancouver).

Oddness everywhere!

Holiday Goodies

What new toyz did everyone get for the holidays?  Any musical instruments, gear, other fun things?

Dave's BassA bit of a preview of a planned segment this coming year on IHR – buying a Bass Guitar.

Regardless, I got a new bass guitar (that’s it over there sitting on my office chair)!  It’s a Yamaha BB414

I’d been looking to get one as I’d been getting tired of the limitations that synth and sampled basses provided to some tunes I’d been writing.

I’ll spare you the details of the buying process as that’ll be in the segment.  I’ve gotta say, I’ve been having a bunch of fun with it.  It’s a very versitile instrument with the two types of pickups (both passive) and just a tone knob, volume knob and pickup selector.

It’s been put to use on a couple of projects already.

I’ll probably be listening to those a year from now and wondering how I actually got paid for playing that sludge!

In case you think Dave is joking about lots of snow, he’s not. Check out my photos for evidence. Even the garbage truck got stuck in my neighbourhood today.

I bought Best of Absynth for Kore Player and also 3 upgrade packs for the Line 6 Pod Studio GX. Yay!

Shane – sweet. Don’t have it, but Absynth is definitely on my list of softsynths to get. Nice!

I picked up Collector Classics and FX Junkie for my UX2!

Hey guys, I just found out about you guys from John Biehler’s site, and am loving the podcasts I’ve d/l so far, especially the rant about how music making should be fun.

Just curious, but can you recommend a decent VST instrument or Halion-compatible sample collection with a broad range of contemporary and orchestral instrument samples? I have a problem with most collections as they usually provide a ton of electronica samples that soon go out of date.

For instance, have you guys ever worked with Sonivox Muse? I was told that film composers find it a workable instrument.

Looking forward to catching up with your podcasts during the new year!

    Dave,

You bought the exact same upgrades for your UX2 that I bought for my GX! I only bought the Best of Absynth Kore Pack–much cheaper than buying Absynth itself!
