    I completely agree with you guys about your dynamic range rant.

    But another thing I have noticed is that rise in the general level of ambient noise. Not sure how it is in Canada, but here in Singapore it’s really bad. I can’t hear your podcast at all on my iPod, unless I turn it all the way up.

    Now with the ambient noise going up, everyone is gonna want their stuff loud and compressed. For podcasts and voice it’s not as bad, since you don’t really expect people to be listening with an ‘artistic’ ear, but more of a casual listen.

    However with music, only the loud and compressed stuff can be heard above all the din, so that could be another reason for the popularity of loud music.

    Yes, a lot of the change is because people are listening in public on un-isolated earphones with poor frequency response, and in cars (although cars have always been part of the rock ‘n’ roll listening experience, even back to AM radio), or in restaurants and pubs, rather than on big speakers at home, or in any sort of quiet environment.
