Yet another new DAW
May 11th, 2009 by Dave
Derek and I talked a bit about new DAWs last episode with the announcement of Presonus’s “Studio One“.
Although it won’t be released until September, Propellerhead has announced it will be releasing THEIR new DAW. It will be called “Record“. Our pals over at SonicState have a great article on the upcoming product. It looks like it will be quite slick with all that you’d expect – audio, MIDI, effects, synths, etc. with tight integration to Reason. They’ve teamed up with Line6 to provide Amp Modeling for the guitarist – a nice touch.
[edit] Just came across an blog post from EM – the major gotcha with Record: it’s apparently a closed system with no support for VST, AU, etc. plugin formats.
Although it’s not going to be released for a while, you can sign up to be a Beta Tester. It looks as though it will be available on both Mac and PC and will be available at a discount to current owners of Reason. It will retail for $USD 299, $USD 149 for “crossgrade from Reason, and $USD 629 for a new bundle with Reason 4.0.

The lack of standard plugin support is very puzzling indeed. Anyone want to speculate about why?

I should have followed Dave’s link. Here’s the reasoning (pun intended):
“[By] not having to support the outside formats, Propellerhead was able to make the system much more efficient for using its included effects [...] ‘We figured we’d rather give you 30 or 40 channels of true, really good, mixer processing, and being able to use it on a computer you already have.’ [...] And he demonstrated that capability by playing back a song from his MacBook Pro [with] at least 50 different instances of effects on that song, and probably more.”
This is also interesting:
“For situations where one wants to export a project out to another DAW, Record has an incredibly easy setup that lets you select the tracks you want to export, hit a button, and boom, it’s done–and all the tracks are automatically set to start at the beginning of the song, making syncing them in another host a breeze.”
Definitely sounds pretty interesting.
