IHR forums down, we’re working on it

February 7th, 2010 by Derek

UPDATED UPDATE 23 Feb 2010: When I “fixed” the forums I somehow bumped them into maintenance mode, so no one else could access them, even though they were working. But because I was logged in as an administrator, I never saw that problem myself. I think things are working now for real. Sorry about that.

UPDATE 5:52 p.m. 7 Feb 2010: Looks like the forums are back, and the problem was the result of a corrupt file. I’m not sure what happened, but we’re online again. Back to your foruming, everyone. Sorry for the interruption.

The IHR Listener Forums are currently down, and we’re not quite sure what’s wrong. I’m looking into it, and will update this post once I figure out how to fix things.

I have a radio show that I’m going to make nationwide and when I’m not in the studio I produce content, but of course, the quality is nowhere near as good as in the studio. At this time the possibility of creating a professional audio system is out of the question. Is there some less expensive way to introduce great quality sound that will not be so jarring with my MacOS system? A special mic perhaps??? Wha?

Isn’t up for me… I see the “we’ll be right back message” and have been seeing it for a couple of weeks. — jord

Sorry, Jord, it was my boneheaded mistake. When I fixed the forum I somehow bumped it into maintenance mode, but because I was logged in as an administrator, *I* never saw that, but everyone else did. Should be fixed now, for real.

Judy, you don’t need a whole studio to get good sound, but a really good mic, as well as good mic technique and some tips and tricks, can help. If you start with a good mic that suits your voice (and if you like the one you use in the studio, try getting the same model), the rest will be much easier. Some of the voiceover/radio people we know like expensive Neumanns, others prefer midrange mics like the Rode NT2A or the Heil PR40. I personally use a cheap MXL990, but I’m not a professional. :)

You might need to nerd out a little bit about gear to get the optimum setup going, but it doesn’t have to cost a gazillion dollars.

Joe Cipriano, the voiceover guy for, well, almost everything, told us that when he’s on the road, all he uses is a very nice Neumann mic on a table stand with a pop filter, hooked via a basic audio interface into his Mac laptop. He sits with his back to the hotel window, with the heavy drapes closed, and places two pillows from the couch or bed in a V shape behind the microphone on a table. And that’s often what you hear on NBC, Fox, the Food Network, and so on.

It might be useful to have an interface that includes a hardware compressor/limiter, or to add your own to the signal chain in front of it. And you might discover you want to use a tube microphone preamp or Aphex Aural Exciter/Big Bottom later, but it’s best to start out with something basic. You might even like to do what I do, and plug your mic directly into a flash recorder like the Zoom H4n, avoiding the computer interface/recording software part to start with.

    I hope that helps.
