Enter the IHR book giveaway with your rig photo
June 28th, 2006 by Derek
UPDATE July 17: People have been having problems with the tags, so we’ve extended the giveaway until show #20. To enter, you can either join and post your photo to the Flickr IHR group photo pool, or simply email your photos to comments {at} insidehomerecording {dot} com. Sorry for the trouble!
We’ll be posting Inside Home Recording episode #18 later today, and it includes a cool giveaway. But you need to do something to enter: post a photo of your recording rig (big or small) to the free Flickr photo sharing website.
UPDATE June 28: The entries have started coming in.
Flickr began in Vancouver, where IHR is based, and is possibly the best photo sharing site out there, because it’s easy to use and also lets visitors comment on and subscribe to streams of photos. (It’s now owned by Yahoo!) I use it all the time for my pictures. Read on to find out how to enter…
What’s the prize?
We’re giving away a copy of Andy Walker‘s excellent security and privacy book, the Absolute Beginner’s Guide to
Security, Spam, Spyware, and Viruses. It’s a thorough and accurate guide, useful for Windows, Mac, and Linux users alike, about how to avoid nasty software, viruses, spam, phishing and fraud scams, and lots of other Internet nasties.
We’ll draw randomly from those who submit photo entries, and announce the winner on our next show after this one, IHR #19.
How do I enter the giveaway?
If you’re not already a member of Flickr, here’s how to sign up for free and get your photos up there:
- Take a picture that shows your recording rig, with whatever gear you use for making your audio, and save it on your computer.
- If you’re not already a member of the Flickr, it uses your existing Yahoo! ID if you have one (if you use Yahoo! email or chat, you should have one already). Just go to flickr.com/signup and you can sign in, or create a free Yahoo! ID from there.
- Follow the instructions to get set up with Flickr, then go to flickr.com/signin.
- Enter your ID and password, and you’re logged in to Flickr.
- From your Flickr home page, flick Upload Photos.
- Click Choose File, and find the photo of your rig you want to upload, then choose it.
- Under where the Flickr upload page says “Add tags for ALL these images,” type any tags you want to add, each separated by spaces. For this contest, the only one you have to add is “ihrigs,” so type at least “ihrigs” (without the quotes) into the box. You can add other tags (whatever words you want) now or later.
- Make sure the privacy is set to Public (it should be automatically), then click Upload.
- Flickr asks you if you want to do more, like add a description, but you don’t have to. We’d appreciate it if you did, though.
- Here’s the really neat thing. Once your photo is uploaded, you can click on it, and then click on the Add Note button above it, drag rectangles around the photo, and label things, like the elements of your gear. Check out my ihrigs photo to see what I mean.
- You can also leave comments on other people’s photos, post photos to your blog from inside Flickr, get prints made (if you’re in the U.S.A.), and more. And no, they’re not paying me for this, I just really like the service.

Okay, now you’re entered! If you want to keep track of all the ihrigs giveaway submissions, you can visit the tag page at flickr.com/photos/tags/ihrigs/. You can even subscribe to an RSS feed of the photos, like you can subscribe to blogs or podcasts.
If you have a Mac with iLife, you can subscribe right inside iPhoto (as a “photocast“) and see the photos as IHR listeners upload them. Just run iPhoto, and choose File > Subscribe to Photocast, then copy and paste the RSS feed address above (flickr.com/services/feeds/photos_public.gne?tags=ihrigs&format=rss_200) and click Subscribe.
Listen to IHR #18 when it comes out later today to hear more about the giveaway.

I’ve uploaded my pictures with the ihrigs tag, but
after two days, still I can’t see it with the rest of the other entries…

I seem to have the same problem Luis. Perhaps the creation of a ihrigs Group would help. My setup can been seen on my on my page at this address: http://www.flickr.com/photos/81534754@N00/

It does look like there’s some trouble with the “ihrigs tag,” which is puzzling. Here is Luis’s photo, plus one from Paul Garay (!) that’s not showing up either.
We’re going to extend the giveaway for another show, and ask anyone who’s had trouble getting their photo to show up in the proper place because Flickr isn’t behaving properly to email us (comments {at} insidehomerecording {dot} com). You can either send us your photo address, or just email us the picture and we’ll get it posted.
Sorry about this! I know it’s a bit frustrating.

Thanks for being on the ball Derek. I’m only involved with two Flickr groups, but I’ve never had problems with my submitted photo’s showing up in them. A “Inside Home Recording:Home Studio setups” could be created. The group also has a forum function. When I join a group, I just click on my photo and send it to that group and it becomes part of that pool right away. Just an option.
Thanks for everything and for pointing us towards Home Recording Odyssey.
