Final IHR appearances on The Lab With Leo available on YouTube, finally: MIDI drums and studio headphones

As we ready to get IHR #86 for January 2011 out the door next week, Ryan Yewell sent me a couple of segments from Leo Laporte‘s old Lab With Leo TV show, which Paul and I used to appear on regularly a few years ago. I don’t think these were ever available online before, and while they’re from back in 2008, they’re still pretty relevant:

The Lab #187 had me talking with Leo about MIDI drums, featuring a Yamaha DTXpress electronic kit I borrowed from a couple of friends:

Episode #190 focused instead on different types of headphones for use in the studio and with iPods and other devices, including in-ear monitors from Etymotic and Shure, open-back headphones from Sennheiser and AKG, and closed-back reference monitors from Sennheiser, Audio-Technica, and Ultrasone:

I miss going on Leo’s show, which was always fun, if hectic. He continues to use my tune “More Red Than Red” (free MP3 download) as the theme music for his TWiT Network podcast with Paul Thurrott, “Windows Weekly.” I doubt I’ll ever get a chance to visit the TWiT studio in California, but apparently the invitation remains open. We certainly enjoyed being part of Leo’s broadcast empire while he was working here in Vancouver.

Back in 2007 and 2008, my then–co-host Paul and I at Inside Home Recording (IHR) regularly appeared on Leo Laporte’s Lab With Leo TV show, made here in Vancouver. My final couple of 2008 segments are now available online, and……

    Hi Derek,

One thing you could add that’s new/related to the headphone segment is that etymotic now lets you pay $100 for custom made earphones.

It seems to do this you tell them where you live, they’ll tell you where you can go get a mold done in your area, an etyomotic partner (I think) then creates the custom mold for your ear and your earphones and ships it to you.

Alex Lindsay had this done for PXC at Macworld, not sure if he’s got the molds yet.

Pretty much all the major manufacturers do that, Shure and Ultimate Ears included.
