Jamming with the audio experts
July 3rd, 2006 by Derek
I just finished a weekend attending the Gnomedex tech conference in Seattle, and one of the coolest parts was rocking out in one of the jam rooms of the Experience Music Project with Dave Dederer, founding guitbassist of the Presidents of the United States of Amerca, and Doug Kaye of IT Conversations and the Conversations Network.
UPDATE: There’s a movie and audio of some of our jam session now.
Now, in addition to running probably the most prolific podcast feed in the world, Doug also used to be a radio recording engineer. If you want to see a crazy equipment rack, check out the gear photos he’s posted on his about page. That’s not in some big studio: that’s Doug’s spare bedroom. (No, he’s not eligible for our contest.) Plus he’s a decent bassist and piloted his own plane from California to Seattle for the event, to boot.
Dave, on the other hand, is not only a fine guitarist and bass player (as you would expect!), but whomps some mean drums, even barefoot. He’s also a super-nice guy, and currently, rather than touring with the Presidents, is staying home with his family, something I certainly understand.
Our three-song setlist was “The Joker,” “All Blues,” and “Mustang Sally.” Lots more about Gnomedex at my blog. Plus there are my photos and many others. And of course, while I was in Seattle, I couldn’t resist visiting one of the local Apple Stores, as well as Guitar Center. Miraculously, I haven’t bought anything at either one so far!

[...] I have posted a large set of my photos to my personal blog, as well as some other thoughts, and there’s a brief audio geek entry over at the podcast I co-host, Inside Home Recording, as well. I return to Vancouver, and somewhat less intensive blogging here, tonight. [...]
